Paihia

Getting up at 6 to catch the Stray bus - hm.
Realizing you only have oats but no milk for breakfast - double hm.

But the second the bus left Auckland - amazing.
Very scenic routes, an informative bus driver and nice, chatty people on the bus. We made a stop to look at some Kauri (pronounced: Cody) trees that are exceptionally old and big.

We also made a stop at the local Farmer's Market in a cute little village, with juicy grapes for tasting and free hand lotion samples (score.)

Then came the exciting part.
We cruised into Paihia, north of Auckland, located in the Bay of Islands. The town is tiny (Stray driver: "Blink and you'll miss it.") All the hostels are in one street leading down to the beach. Jungle walks are nearby, kayaking, boat tours, everything is only a stone's throw away.

Due to a storm hitting the north of New Zealand, a lot of people are skipping town, leaving us with a little rain and a looot of free beds. We even managed to get a job - working for accommodation in a hostel for three days, then taking the Stray bus down south.

The great part is, we only have to make beds for an hour and have access to the full facilities. Pool, Jacuzzi, computers. Slow Wifi.

Life could be worse.
